SHADES Program -Empowering Foster Youths

FOR A FUTURE SO BRIGHT YOU GOTTA WEAR … SHADES

FOSTER YOUTH ARE CATCHING THE LIMO RIDE TO SUCCESS TO THE SHADES MONEY SKILLS WORKSHOPS IN TEMECULA, MORENO VALLEY AND RIVERSIDE

Thanks to a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation through a partnership with United Way Worldwide, UWIV has kicked off the first of 12 financial literacy workshops geared to help foster youth succeed. Our goal is to reduce homelessness, incarceration and drug addiction in this at-risk population that have been abused and neglected by their parents.

In only 6 classes, the youth learn banking basics (Banking 101; affordable or free trade school and college choices (School Daze); how to buy a car (Deals on Wheels); planning for your paycheck, budgeting (Show Me the $ Money); how to avoid identity theft and credit problems (Credit Blues), and end up by playing the Game of Life- a practical learning exercise from all of they've learned. Classes are interactive and special guests give real life examples. Certificates of Completion are given during a graduation ceremony..

Because this program is one of the strategies of UWIV's Foster Youth Asset Building Initiative, alumni of the program will be eligible for opportunities for savings match programs towards Individual Development Accounts to be used towards college/vocational training, housing and/or transportation.

Special thinks to all of our sponsors and partners in the program including: The Gas Company; Sunset Limousine, Inc.; Springboard, The Creative Bar; Perfect Limos; Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County; City of Riverside; The Empowerment Center (Temecula); Youth Opportunity Center (Moreno Valley); Department of Public Social Services; Riverside Community College District/Independent Living Program.
