UNITED WAY ANNOUNCES NEW CEO

Riverside (July 5, 2006)
Larry Rubio, CEO of Riverside Transit Agency and Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Way of the Inland Valleys (UWIV) announced that Kevin McCarthy has accepted the role of Chief Executive Officer with UWIV, replacing retiring CEO, Raymond Humphrey.

A graduate of Michigan State University, McCarthy says he is absolutely delighted to be joining the team at United Way. “Ray, his staff and the dedicated volunteers have done a wonderful job in this community, and my hope is to continue and to expand upon that tradition. I am looking forward to working with the board, community volunteers and great companies and organizations that are involved with United Way.”

A long term veteran of the United Way movement, McCarthy started with United Way of Greater St. Louis in 1987 and went on to serve with United Ways in Rockford, IL; Long Island, New York; Tulsa, OK; and San Angelo, TX raising over $72 million during the course of his public service career.

The accomplishment of which he is most proud is the creation of an early childhood provider network that prevented the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases from 18 teenage mothers to their infants under a program called Success By 6®. “This program saved the infants from horrible deformities, illness or death and saved the community over $1.5 million in excess medical bills. Now those children and their parents have a chance at becoming productive, tax-paying members of our society. That is the power of early childhood programs, that is the power of the community coming together to meet needs in a United Way’” said McCarthy.

McCarthy and his wife Joy having recently moved from Melbourne, Australia will be settling in Riverside and look forward to becoming a part of the western Riverside County community.
