UNITED WAY
GRANTS NEARLY $50,000 TO LOCAL AGENCIES
August 7, 2002 (Riverside, CA) The Board of
Directors of the United Way of the Inland Valleys has allocated
nearly $50,000 in seed grants to support new and expanded
programs addressing United Way of the Inland Valleys
identified priority needs. The agencies receiving the seed
grant funding address health care, supportive services, family
stability, parenting skills, domestic violence, child abuse,
and crime victim assistance.
- American Lung Association of the Inland
Counties - $13,500 for an Asthma Care for Preschool Children.
This program targets parents of asthmatic children, childcare
and preschool staff in the Temecula/Murrieta areas. The
focus of the program provides basic asthma education, how
to recognize symptoms and triggers, how to react to emergency
situations, education on asthma medications and the proper
use of nebulizers. A variety of resource materials including
videos, books, puppets and written materials will be used
and provided to those participating in training sessions.
The grant allows this program to be expanded into the Southwest
County where it has not been available. -more-

- EXCEED Valley Resource Center
- $12,000 for a Health Education and Promotion Pilot Program.
This program will provide services that promote wellness,
health care and healthy living to developmentally disabled
adults and other persons with disabilities in the Perris
Valley and surrounding areas. The program components include
nutrition/healthy eating, womens health issues, medications,
substance abuse, signs and symptoms of illness, mental health
services, assistive technologies and access to medical services.
A registered nurse or physicians assistant will provide
health screenings at least twice a year, and participants
will be transported for education and training. This prevention
program is directed to a population that rarely understands
or has knowledge about healthy living and is usually provided
health care only when they are already sick.
- Nonprofit Management Services, Inc. -
$15,000 for Childrens Assistance Learning and Mediation.
The program will provide parenting education and support
services to Murrieta and Temecula teens and other parents
of children 0-5. Participants in the program will be trained
in parenting and basic life skills, providing a healthy
home environment, personal financial management, household
budgeting, goal setting and how to access information and
resources. The goal of the program is to ensure family stability
and enhance the relationships between parent and child.
- Valley Restart Shelter - $9,463 for Families
In Trouble. The program will provide anger management,
parenting classes and case management to families in the
Lake Elsinore and Perris areas. Families that are at risk
of disintegrating due to

violence, abuse, substance abuse or are at
risk of homelessness are the target population. Classes
will be provided at the agencys Perris facility with
transportation provided for those who need it. United Way
funding will help support a part time staff position that
will be directly responsible for teaching the classes.
United Way of the Inland Valleys, has been
serving Western Riverside County through programs and services
provided by local community agencies and organizations since
1931.
