UNITED WAY GRANTS NEARLY $50,000 TO LOCAL AGENCIES

August 7, 2002 (Riverside, CA) The Board of Directors of the United Way of the Inland Valleys has allocated nearly $50,000 in seed grants to support new and expanded programs addressing United Way of the Inland Valleys’ identified priority needs. The agencies receiving the seed grant funding address health care, supportive services, family stability, parenting skills, domestic violence, child abuse, and crime victim assistance.

  • American Lung Association of the Inland Counties - $13,500 for an Asthma Care for Preschool Children. This program targets parents of asthmatic children, childcare and preschool staff in the Temecula/Murrieta areas. The focus of the program provides basic asthma education, how to recognize symptoms and triggers, how to react to emergency situations, education on asthma medications and the proper use of nebulizers. A variety of resource materials including videos, books, puppets and written materials will be used and provided to those participating in training sessions. The grant allows this program to be expanded into the Southwest County where it has not been available. -more-

  • EXCEED Valley Resource Center - $12,000 for a Health Education and Promotion Pilot Program. This program will provide services that promote wellness, health care and healthy living to developmentally disabled adults and other persons with disabilities in the Perris Valley and surrounding areas. The program components include nutrition/healthy eating, women’s health issues, medications, substance abuse, signs and symptoms of illness, mental health services, assistive technologies and access to medical services. A registered nurse or physician’s assistant will provide health screenings at least twice a year, and participants will be transported for education and training. This prevention program is directed to a population that rarely understands or has knowledge about healthy living and is usually provided health care only when they are already sick.

  • Nonprofit Management Services, Inc. - $15,000 for Children’s Assistance Learning and Mediation. The program will provide parenting education and support services to Murrieta and Temecula teens and other parents of children 0-5. Participants in the program will be trained in parenting and basic life skills, providing a healthy home environment, personal financial management, household budgeting, goal setting and how to access information and resources. The goal of the program is to ensure family stability and enhance the relationships between parent and child.

  • Valley Restart Shelter - $9,463 for Families In Trouble. The program will provide anger management, parenting classes and case management to families in the Lake Elsinore and Perris areas. Families that are at risk of disintegrating due to
