MORTGAGE BURNS AS UNITED WAY OF THE INLAND VALLEYS
HONORS VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS

(Riverside, California) United Way of the Inland Valleys’ annual meeting is history as is the mortgage they’ve been paying since 1993. In addition to a mortgage burning ceremony attended by firemen from Riverside and Moreno Valley Fire Departments, the annual meeting was a time to honor volunteers, recognize donors and give thanks for a debt free building.

Tom Powell, 2001 United Way board chairman, presented his successor, Debbi Huffman Guthrie, with the chairman’s gavel for the coming year.

Dr. Damon Castillo, Jr. of Riverside County Office of Education received an award for exceptional service to the board of directors.

Riverside Community Hospital received United Way’s Community Service Award for outstanding commitment to United Way and the community at large. Bob Bowers was on hand to accept the award.

Mike Vanderpool of City National Bank and Paul Goodus, 1993 United Way Chairman of the Board were on hand to conduct the mortgage burning ceremony. United Way purchased the building on River Crest Drive in 1993. "I am proud to be part of the heritage of this great organization," Paul Goodus commented. "As the Board Chair when United Way entered into its agreement with City National Bank, I saw the purchase of the building as a foundation through which United Way could continue its great service to the people of Western Riverside County."

As a copy of the mortgage was lit, firemen from the Riverside and Moreno Valley Fire Stations stood by.

Of special significance at the annual meeting was recognition of the 217 individuals who made donations of $1000 or more to this year’s campaign, qualifying for United Way’s Landmark Society for Community Caring. Aided by local artist, Judy Field, Debbi Huffman Guthrie, Landmark Chair for 2001, presented framed prints of Field’s original drawing of The Peace Tower on Mt. Rubidoux to those in attendance.

United Way has been serving the residents of Western Riverside County since 1931.
