The Community Settlement Association of Riverside is celebrating its
90th anniversary. Founded in 1911 to provide day care for working mothers,
CSA has continuously served Eastside families who need assistance.
Executive Director Dorella "Dorie" Anderson (pictured at left with
three small friends) has been with the organization for over 30 years.
"I've been here so long that I am working with the kids of the kids who
were here when I started," she says. "In fact in two cases, I'm
working with the grandkids of the kids who were here my first year-1969."
Dorie herself knows the good that Community Settlement can do.
"When I was a little girl, my brother had polio. The Settlement made
it possible for my brother to go to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. I
never forgot what that meant to my family."
While she threatens to retire every so often, Dorie admits it won't be
easy: "You know, I just love this place."
Community Settlement Association is open Monday through Friday, 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It offers a youth program (7 to 12 years of age), a teen
program (13 to 17 years of age), community workshops, bilingual services, senior
special events, a food pantry for families in crisis, domestic violence support
group and parenting classes.
In addition, Community Settlement offers a court-referred DUI Services
program and a thrift store.

Sody
(Eusodia) and her three children, Steffanie, Steven and Elliot, lived in the
same rented house for nine years when her landlord lost the property, and she
found herself without ready cash to rent another place. Her only choice was to
move in with her childrens grandmother, where 11 people already lived in a
three-bedroom house. Quality family life is impossible in the cramped quarters.
While enrolling her youngest child in school, Sody saw a flyer advertising Habitat
for Humanity Riverside. Approved by Habitats selection
committee, she eagerly began working off the 500 hours of "sweat
equity" that must be completed before moving into her own home. Sody will
gain additional hours when she joins the construction crews on site when the
build begins, and she has already completed a home buyer education class.
Because of Habitat for Humanity Riverside and her own hard work, Sody
will be providing her family with the quality home she so desperately wants and
deserves.
