Community Impact

With the current economic downturn affecting so many, the need for Base Support Funding for safety net programs is greater than ever. Although allocable funds for our member agencies declined almost 25% in the 2009-2010 campaign, we are still proud to have supported our member agencies with critical funds totaling $1,096,643 in the 2010-2011 funding cycle. A change from program funding to capacity building allows the agencies the flexibility to use United Way dollars to best serve the

community with its core competencie.

We believe that in order for people to be financially stable and independent, they need a good education and to be in good health. A fourth focus area has been added to address DISASTER PREPAREDNESS & RECOVERY to prepare for the next large disaster, whether it be a wildfire, flood or the catastrophic 7.8 earthquake. Through the Community Engagement Process, UWIV brings community leaders, businesses, schools, medical institutions, government entities and the non profit community together to make positive changes to create long lasting results.

Current Community Initiativesinclude the following:

INCOME/FINANCIAL STABILITY

MoneyWork$* - UWIV has partnered with financial institutions to provide free money management workshops in the workplace. A company picks from a variety of classes, such as Banking 101, Credit Repair, Identity Theft, Retirement Planning, which are offered to their employees in brown bag lunches or after work. Free classes are also being provided to college students, teens in foster care, and to the public at community centers.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) UWIVs financial stability work begins with tools and strategies that help families increase and maximize their income in order to meet daily expenses, as well as begin the longer-term process of saving and building assets. In collaboration with the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County providing free preparation services and a grant from Bank of America, 1,935 Riverside County residents received $2,442,508 in tax refunds, of which $1,050,606 was from the Earned Income Tax Credit.

EDUCATION

Agelity Discount Prescription Drug Plan The discount plan provides members significant savings through the use of their provided Discount Prescription Drug Card. At the point of sale, members simply present their card at a participating pharmacy and their discount is instantly applied. Any individual with limited or no prescription drug plan can benefit from the Discount Prescription Drug card. These cards can reduce prescription drug costs by an average of 15% on brand drugs & 40% on generic drugs.

HEXEX - UWIV is in a coalition with 94 community leaders from hospitals, clinics, universities, health and human services providers, elected officials, educators, businesses and funders with the mission to convene to improve the publics health.
