2010 Day of Caring - Perris Region
Dr. Norman Towels, CEO of the Perris Community Partnership and Youth Council, led 50 volunteers from the Youth Council, Perris Fire Department, Rio Ranch Market, Oasis Youth Opportunity Center, Street Smart Self Defense, and the California Military Institute to help improve the community of Perris.
During the morning rally and 9/11 tribute, an inspirational poem, written by 7-year old Annie Fuentes, was read by Adylene Jimenez. The crowd was moved by the thoughts of someone so young who wasn't even born when 9/11 hit, but has been impacted her entire life.
The group concentrated on restoring the grounds of the Dora Nelson African American Art and History Museum, which included clearing 3 1/2 lots of overgrown weeds, trimming trees, picking up trash, mowing and haling the debris away. The Nelson family provided a tour of the full of diverse cultural history, shared inspiring stories and refreshments in gratitude for the landscape manicure for the community.
Other volunteers participated at the City of Perris' Housing Fair and helped to pass out free soccer balls at Rio Ranch Market's future site, which will open soon and employ 75-90 residents.
