2010 Day of Caring - Moreno Valley
About 150 volunteers participated in 5 projects helping those in need Moreno Valley. Taking place at Moreno Valley College, the day began at 7am with registration, coffee and free breakfast burritos with a short program to kick off the day.
A warm welcome by Moreno Valley Mayor Bonnie Flickinger thanked the volunteers for dedicating their time to serving others. Aaron Vigil, a contestant from American Idol, sang the National Anthem and a moment of silent was taken in commemoration of 9/11.
An additional project that took place prior to the Day of Caring was by Moreno Valley and Val Verde High School students who wrote 2,000 heartfelt letters of praise to active military overseas and to soldiers arriving at March Air Base.Volunteers did projects like painted rooms at the Immaculate Care Center and Catholic Charities, cleaned carpets at the US Vets Center, and spent time with senior citizens and Alzheimer's patients.
At noon, all the volunteers returned for a program including lunch and entertainment.. As the volunteers ate, Dancing Images performed several contemporary dance numbers and Hula Pikake provided a taste of Hawaiian cultural dances. Throughout the program, disaster preparation backpacks were raffled off.
The Moreno Valley DOC committee included Co-Chairs Pastors Ted and Valinda Collins, Mel Alonzo, Kandace Baptist, Scott Harris, Heidi Meadows, Patti Rucker, Norma Sanchez, Alix Lopez, Virgil Chancy and Roxie Strause.
